Will Shaffer named OAC Offensive Player of the Week following the Polar Bears 2 Win Start!
Ohio Northern Men’s Soccer Captain Will Shaffer was named OAC Offensive Player of the Week last week! Will has had an unbelievable start with 3 goals in 2 games, already tallying his total from last season! Not only has Will Shaffer had a great start to the season, but so has the rest of the Polar Bears. As mentioned before in previous blog posts Ohio Northern came into the season ranked 13th in the nation. The Polar Bears had a lot of talk and pressure to continue the great season that they had the year before.
Since the season started last
week, the Polar Bears had a hot start to the season! As mentioned above Will Shaffer,
was one of the goal scorers for their huge win over #5 ranked Kenyon. The Polar
Bears started off strong with a dominating win against Kenyon. Brenden Gervers
had a crazy shot in the second half to give the Polar Bears the lead and Junior
Ryan Sommerfeld was another goal scorer for the Polar Bears late in the game
with a penalty kick. This was a big step in the right direction for the Polar Bears
as they would take this momentum and move it into the game on Sunday against
Oberlin.
The Polar
Bears would come out with a good start against Oberlin on Sunday but were
unable
to find the back of the net for the first half. The Polar Bears would then come
out firing into the second half, starting with a goal from Sam McKee from just
outside of the box to open up his scoring tally for the season. Just 37 seconds
later, Will Shaffer would score a beautiful chip over the keeper from inside
the box to put the Polar Bears up 2-0 inside the first 4 minutes of the second half.
Ryan Sommerfeld would cap another goal for the season for him on a small turnover
from Oberlin. Collin Gottron would finish off the game with a goal from inside
the six-yard box. This is Collin’s first goal of his Ohio Northern career! The
Polar Bears now play tomorrow against a ranked Calvin side!
Go Bears!
